I’m an assistant professor of journalism and communication at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a research fellow at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism (Columbia Journalism School).
I’ve spent most of my career doing applied, mixed-methods research about media, civics and technology (Pew Research Center), with earlier stints in journalism and advocacy writing.
My current work explores amplification of gender bias on social platforms (with Nikki Usher and Justin Littman), UX and the geography of local online journalism, community information ecologies, and the influence of religion on public attitudes about the news.
I love collaborations that bring data to bear upon problems facing journalism and civic life. Currently I’m a partner in the News Deserts Project— a joint effort of the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism and Chicago’s Better Government Association). I’m working with the Institute for Nonprofit News on a major survey of newsrooms, focusing on audience engagement and business models (fall 2018). I’m also teaming up with the Center for Cooperative Media (Montclair State University) on a study of local news ecosystems.
